A Legacy of Rage: The final hours

By LG Olson | 2008

She shook as she pushed into the corner, the sound of gunshots taking the life of the last one. Horrified and alone she waited for her turn when the door open and a man was pushed inside the room. Tears rolled down her face as he stumbled in and the door slammed and locked. He stood dazed for a moment then spotted her in the corner. "Tessa," he choked as he ran to her and fell to his knees. Tess cried out as she grabbed him and they held each other.
"Matt," she whimpered and cried, clinging to him.
He held her tightly as she cried in his arms, running his hand down the back of her head. A man entered and stood a moment, he finally spoke, choked up. "You have until dawn. No one will bother you." He choked out as Matt turned his head and gazed at him, then turned and walked out; locking the door.
He closed his eyes and held her head to his chest. "Shh, I'm here." He kissed her forehead. "Look at me Tess," he whispered as he took her tear soaked cheeks in his hands. "I love you."
"I love you to," she choked out trying hard to contain herself. He softly kissed her quivering lips, it took only a moment for her to react to his kiss. They kissed deeply as they clung to each other, both shaking violently in each others arms. "I'd rather die with you than live without you." He whispered as she nodded her head and cried.
"Me to." She choked out, hardly able to get it out.
"I don't regret one moment I have gotten to spend with you," he whispered. She kissed him deeply as he pulled her closed and absorbed his kiss.
"One last moment," she tried so hard to smile and failed miserably. "We're going to die, aren't we."
He swallowed hard and nodded, she broke down as she clung to him. "Corey will take care of the girls, you know that. They'll be safe now." The cry that came from her tore through him, he shook as he broke and began to cry. "They will know about us and how much we loved them."
He kissed her passionately and they carefully went to the floor. "One last time," she whispered as she pulled his body onto hers. He shook as she clung to him and they made love for the final time on that cold floor. There was nothing and nobody that could take that from them. No one.

The sun began to rise as they dressed, it was silent as he pulled her close and her head rested on his chest, listening to his heartbeat. He gazed up as the door opened and two men walked inside. "It's time," one said.
Matt nodded his head and closed his eyes, tightening his grip on her as she began to cry. "Let me stay with her until it's time. But, I don't want her to see me die." He choked out.
He nodded as Matt pulled her shaking body up, "Matt. No. I wanna be with you," she choked out in a hysterical breakdown as he lead her along to the door.
"I've been with you all along and I will be with you in the end. I promise," he whispered in her ear as she clung to him, hardly able to walk.
Just outside the door they separated them, "Tessa! Look at me. I'm right here, I'm right here baby," he choked out as they bound their hands behind their backs with duck tape.
"I don't wanna die! Please, Matt make them stop," she begged pitifully as he watched them begin to pull her towards the door, screaming and crying for him. He closed his eyes as they pushed him forward and they followed. His name screaming from inside her with so much terror and grief he could hardly stand it.
They pushed them into the back of the van and shut the doors. He sat up against the wall, shaking. Tess stumbled on her knees to him, a hysterical mess as she curled between his legs and laid against chest. He kissed her head and tried to console her as the van began to move. The van was silent, nothing. Two men in the front and one sat in the back with them, gazing down at the gun in his hand.
The van stopped and the men got out. Matt closed his eyes and laid his cheek against her head. "I love you," he whispered.
"I love you ," she whispered as she gazed up at him and they kissed. He forced a smile as he gazed down at her for the last time. "Where have you been all my life?" he choked out.
"Waiting for you," she kissed him deeply.
The back door opened and Matt was pulled from her, she screamed pitifully as the door closed. Crying hysterically as his name echoed from inside the van. A few minutes later gunshots. She froze in horror and grief. "I love you." She whimpered and her body just fell in shock, the tears running heavy from her eyes. "I love you." She cried out so painfully as it rocked her body.
A few minutes later the door opened and she screamed as he pulled her out, she stood a moment and gazed around at all the trees and the river below. He pulled a strip of duck tape and slapped it over her mouth, then pulled another and did it again. Her eyes darting as she tried to breathe, her chest heaving painfully as she tried to remain standing. He back away as two men walked up from the river bank, tears rolled down her face. "He's waiting for you down on the bank." He said so calmly as he pointed towards the river, then softly pushed her in that direction. She turned her head and gazed at him so horrified he couldn't look at her, and looked away. She shook violently as she forced her legs to move towards the river. Inside her mind all she wanted was to get to Matt, be with him. She found herself running towards the river banks, through brush and weeds.

The water flowed quietly past the shore; the early morning light slowly rising in the east through the dense cottonwoods and pines. Tessa stumbled through the weeds and brush to the shore. Her hands tightly bound with duck tape behind her back.
Dropping to her knees, her cries muffled by the duck tape over her lips, her body bent over in grief and terror. As three men slowly approached, one with a 9MM handgun in his hand hanging at his side, he stopped and stared down at her quietly. He carefully pulled it up and aimed it her; pulling the hammer back. She jumped hard as it clicked. Her eyes full of terror as she started crying hysterically.
"Look at me. I said LOOK AT ME!"
Her entire body jolted at his scream, as she cautiously turned her shaking head and stared horrified at him, her body trembling violently.
"You did this...You did this to me...I loved you so much," he said slowly, coldly.
She closed her eyes tightly, tears streaming hard down her face as she looked away from the gun to the sand below her, then to the body. Tears rolled to the ground as she sobbed through the duck tape as she gazed at Matt lying there. He slowly walked up to her and stood directly behind her as she tried to crawl away. He followed her with determination; keeping aim. She shook her head no repeatedly, as she begged him through her sealed lips.
"You don't get to live without me," he said low through gritted teeth. "YOU DON'T GET TO LIVE!" He screamed with the gun shaking in his hand; he pulled the trigger.
She hit the ground with the force of the bullets that riddled through her. She gasped and tears ran down her cheeks as the bullets ripped through her back, crushing bone and ripping flesh. Shaking violently as her body struggled to realize what just went threw it, she still tried to crawl away and her feet paddled slowly through the blood and sand. Nevertheless, the bullets forced her unwillingly body to the cold wet sand. Her breathing in sudden slow short gasps as blood slowly came up through her nose and the cracks in the duck tape; watching her own blood suddenly pour from her chest to the sand below, steaming as it cooled.
When the clip emptied of all but one bullet, he slowly lowered the gun to his side and stood silent, staring down at her watching her suffer. Hearing her gasp and moan, as her face grew pale, blood pooling under her chest as her body writhed in it. Finally giving in she slowly curled up on her side, shaking as her body started die.
She stared at the dark figures that stood above her, her eyes dilated as her vision tunneled and they seemed to fade away to shadows. She slowly rolled her head and whimpered softly as she tried so hard to fight the darkness that was quickly devouring her mind. Memories, and moments flashed deep inside her mind, faces and places she once loved, a touch, a sound, all fading into an abyss. She gasped hard through the duct tape, causing bubbles of blood to be forced out. Her face slowly relaxed as her cheek rested in the wet sand as she stared at Matt's body; blood rolled from her nose to a puddle beneath her face. Each painful gasp for air sucking the duct tape in and out with bubbles of blood forming as air blew through the seams and ran down the tape. Her body still softly trembling and her brown eyes teared and glazed, as her breathing became nothing but a short gasp here and there.
"I love you," he whispered as he walked up and pointed the gun to her head and pulled the trigger.
Blood pooled and slowly ran down to the water's edge.
The sun rose as he gazed up at the tree line. He closed his eyes as tears rolled down his cheeks, "fuck you Tess. Fuck you both."
Matt laid face down and silent a few feet away, slowly dying as he walked up to him, and released the empty clip; it fell to the ground. He reached back and pulled another from his back pocket and slammed it into the gun, pulling the bolt back, it loaded with a loud click. He aimed carefully aimed down at Matt as he rolled his head to see her lying there. Blood running down her face, her eyes locked on him, dead. Her name fell from his lips as his body relaxed and the shots fired.
