Little Boxes

Little boxes

I have a box that holds my soul and lined it with my heart
I have another that holds the light, the other holds the dark
A box for friends to come to stay and be welcomed in its walls
A box that is covered in dark grey that holds unanswered calls
A box for feelings yet to feel, a box for tears to fill
A box for smiles and silly things, a box where tensions dwell
A box for family, chores and wounds a box of scars not healed
A box for flowers yet to bloom, another for feelings to feel.
I keep these boxes in a row hiding behind the bed,
I take them out from time to time to rummage through my head
And when they’re open one by one like all the others before
My little boxes in a row march toward the open door.
They beckon me to follow them to see them fly away
My little boxes taught me to never let them lay,
that all the things that make up me,
Are in me now to stay.
