8 million tons of trees chopped down yearly, deforestation of Canada’s Boreal Forest, endangered woodland caribou, and a lack of defense against global warming are not things one might think of when the words bras and panties come to mind. But there is a dirty secret we, as a society, need to surface for the world of consumers. Catalog retailers send out 20 billion catalogs a year, and almost non of the paper contains any recycled content. 8 million tons of trees a year go into catalogs alone. These very same catalogs, ones that have most likely been mailed to your homes and businesses for the "consumer’s" convenience by companies like Victoria’s Secret, have been made from some of the world’s most endangered forests.
Victoria’s Secret mails out more then 1 million catalogs a day, catalogs made from trees cut down from such endangered landmarks as Canada’s Boreal Forest. They are sent to homes, offices and businesses, even when they are not asked for. Those catalogs are filled cover to cover with sale pitches and eye grabbers like, “pennies for panties” and “Don’t delay! Shop now before it’s all gone." If only consumers and the Victoria Secret’s corporate yes-men knew the irony of those words. “Deforestation for dollars” and “Stop now! Before it’s all gone,” is the true problem behind each scantily clad model and pink painted department store.
Do to high pressure from activists around the world, 10% of Victoria Secret’s catalogs are now made from recycled paper, but a messily 10% is NOT enough. From such a successful and wealthy company we should expect more.
