Visual art = visual signs of the whole of reality for all to share. This has been the function that visual arts assumed since the dawn of human culture till sometime around 1900. There is no reason to believe the cult of "whatever" that reigned during the 20th century has to go further any longer. Its only success was to plunge us all in cultural confusion and now the time has come to wipe that confusion from our sights. If humanity is to survive the aberrations observed in late-modernity visual arts will have to play a decisive role in producing the visual signs of a worldview wherein humanity is interrelated with all that exists within the "whole".
